The Multicultural Education Institute at the University of Central Oklahoma will receive World Experiences Foundation’s 2017 Global Citizen Award in Education.
The Multicultural Education Institute at the University of Central Oklahoma unites educators in the Oklahoma City metro area to share the latest strategies and practices that help improve educating our increasingly diverse communities.
MEI is committed to the recognition of excellence in multicultural education and each year the Multicultural Awards Committee selects a recipient for the Teacher of the Year, Citizen of the Year and Paraprofessional of the Year, as well as Teacher Incentive Grant Award winners.Beginning in the year 2000, the Multicultural Institute also awarded Multicultural Institute Teacher Incentive Grants to encourage teachers to implement multicultural strategies into their classroom environments. The Incentive Grants are supported through donations to UCO specifically for this purpose and with funds raised through a Silent Auction.
This annual event is developed through collaborative efforts with several education agencies including school districts and community service groups, the Oklahoma State Department and Oklahoma Regents for Higher Education. The Institute brings together presenters from across the state and the nation to speak to Oklahoma’s future and current teachers, and other educators about critical issues and concerns related to schooling in our culturally diverse society. The event is offered in a conference format providing several concurrent sessions that focus on cross-cultural understanding and the implementation of strategies and programs that build tolerance and academic success for all students. The Institute also features exhibits and multicultural entertainment.
Participants receive a certificate of attendance for professional development purposes and may also enroll for one or two hours of undergraduate or graduate college credit from UCO. There is also an optional follow-up weekend that participants enrolled in credit may attend if they choose.
